    John Lewis Partnership, which owns its namesake department store chain as well as supermarket chain Waitrose, has cut its staff bonus scheme after posting a loss in its most recent full-year results ended January 28, 2023.
    The company posted a loss before exceptional items and tax of 78 million pounds, down from a profit of 181 million pounds a year earlier, which it said was primarily due to the economic backdrop and inflationary pressures.

    Total sales at John Lewis Partnership for the year to January 28, 2023, were 12.25 billion pounds, down 2 percent with Waitrose sales of 7.31 billion pounds, down 3 percent and John Lewis sales of 4.94 billion pounds, up 0.2 percent.
    The company reported pre-tax loss of 78 million pounds, down from profit of 181 million pounds last year, principally due to economic backdrop and inflationary pressures. Loss before tax was 234 million pounds, down from a loss of 27 million pounds last year.
